Invisible Joe takes June Tourney!!
A whoooooooooooole lotta new things occurred at the June tourney. First, and probably MOST importantly, we found out just how huge a burden and chore it is to pull off a seamless event when Jim is not there. Your past contributions are even more appreciated, and future ones are ABSOLUTELY expected!!!!
It all started at the end of a side street in an open floored men’s club. A record five new players were added to the event, in the hope that they had both read and understood what they were joining via the website. With it’s now extensive and detailed breakdown of all aspects of our game and structure, it seemed we might be growing in a good direction had things gone well…
This is where our story takes a twist. The game began with a few grumbles about the computer seating players, and getting it going full steam. The play was fast and expensive on table 1. About ten minutes into it, the Saw made her first cut, felting (taking all the chips) two players with quad queens, to take a GINORMOUS early lead, which she would redistribute later. We may have to change her name to United Way. The re-buys were coming too fast to keep up with, as players everywhere were throwing chips in the middle as fast as they could. Table 2 took a little longer to get going, but got tired of us at table 1 having all the fun, and started playing looser themselves.
The break came and went, as the food wasn’t set to arrive until 7:30, so we played on 2 more blind structures. Big, HUGE ups to Meaty for only having to buy 200k in chips at the break. The burrito arrived and was gone before anyone realized what happened. The beer was soon to follow, as we’ve forgotten the past when players all brought either drink or snacks to complement the main course. We need to remember that, and chip in a little with something of our own again. As play resumed, there was a power shift at table 1 when Zug flopped trip kings and dialed the bat phone, which of course was answered by the Saw who had Big chick and failed to see the two kings on the board when he moved in later in the hand. Bless her bladed heart for thinking two pair beats three of a kind, but that call rang up 800k in charges that Zug would parlay into 3rd place, and a hiccup away from points leader in the yearly race.
Table 2 saw Meaty claim the headhunter, eliminating My name is Earl, and poising himself for a strong finish. It wasn’t to be, as players fell like trees in a hurricane, and that’s when the storm struck and the mayhem began…
The final three featured brothers Joe & Vinnie, along with Zug. After lots of prior and continuing comments and complaints about the blinds and blind structure, all of which can be located well before game time on www.southbaypokertour.com there was a move to cut the game short, and award the money based on chip count. If you actually GO to the above mentioned website, you’ll see a spinning sign that reads “about us”. It tells you in pointed detail why we are playing and what we are playing for. Although this is a “tournament”, it’s only to glorify our home game premise, and give it some structure so everyone gets a shot at the trophy, and the most play for their buck. That being said, they were told we play to a winner, and play resumed. Unsatisfied with the established structure, and with hints and mentions of not continuing beyond this game, the final two played with their own blind structure, and Joe eventually won out over brother Vinnie.
There were no pics taken of the winner as it all happened so fast, thus the Invisible Joe headline. The final hand pic is the only proof this nightmare actually occurred. Our apologies to any who may have thought this was a real tournament, being a fast paced race to the money format. We also accept the apologies from any who haven’t taken the time to read & explore the website, to understand what we are trying to accomplish in the S.B.P.T. We obviously aren’t expecting any, as they won’t read this, because they don’t visit and explore www.southbaypokertour.com in the first place. Let’s just look forward to next month’s game, and pray that Slick doesn’t have another shutdown or we be in lots o’ trouble!!!
A TREMENDOUS thanks to Sponge & Sandy for running the game we had. It was tough & trying, but we’re all still here, so thanks again to you both, along with all the other players.
*You can show your appreciation to Sponge, by tipping him with a cold Coor’s Light (the official beer of the S.B.P.T) at the next game. Just make sure it’s not one of HIS you give him ; )
