Lady Luck Crowns Slick Lord of “The Ring” at Proffitt’s Palace!!!

Playing against a field of 12 is hard enough, but playing against someone with Lady Luck on their lap proved too much for the other 11 players at the May Tournament.  Proffitt’s Palace was the perfect setting for a breezy, Saturday afternoon showdown. The hosts did a great job of making everyone in attendance feel welcome, with a full bar, pool table and the 50/50 chance of playing on a custom ring table.

After enjoying the pre-game festivities, with special thanks to Scooter & Slick for the literally heart-stopping Tijuana Stray Dog Smokies, (the only other place I’ve seen a dog wrapped in bacon), we all chose our seats and sat in for a briskly paced game with lots of action. At the kid’s table, Brawny recovered early from her failure to gain a seat at “The Ring” and maintained a decent stack throughout the early rounds. Memphis controlled most of the action early on, and was the clear chip leader at the break. Then things got interesting, It really wasn’t a party until the M.C. showed up, and Poker-Fu quickly scattered chips into everyone’s stack before raking them back in, only to watch Brawny flex her mighty muscles and call his all-in bluff to soak up all his chips.

Meanwhile, at “The Ring”, there was a lot of tight play early on, as Chilidog took her seat next to El Guapo (a recurring theme this year).  Not much took place, until Underdog made an Ace-high flush on the turn, only to be stunned after El Guapo caught his 4th Queen on the river.  The action picked up after the break, and chips were moving back and forth until attrition caught up to a few players, and we slowly dwindled down to 6.

At the final table, The Saw was unplugged as Lady Luck made her first appearance of the night. Her dominating two-pair were undone by Slick’s draw-out flush, and she was sent to the poolroom. El Guapo became the dogcatcher, and dispatched both Under & Chili-dog to amass a formidable stack to make a play at his first title. After Slick beat him to the punch and went all-in with his pocket 4’s, he called with A-9 suited and let his top pair of 9’s decide his fate. After later hearing he was basically a 92% favorite when the chips hit the middle, he was left to determine that Lady Luck had made her second appearance. The turn produced a 4, and Slick’s improbable 2-out set brought down the would-be champion with a thud.

Lady Luck’s third appearance came on the very next hand. Slick looked down to find a familiar pair of 4’s staring back at him. Memphis Belle survived a World War, but was helpless and all-in   against Slick and his lady friend. That left Slick and his fortress of chips alone against Brawny and her few stones.

She put up an admirable battle, marching her short stack into battle over and over. She withstood the first few blows and kept her head firmly attached, but eventually her head, chips, and dreams of a repeat were all in Slick’s possession.  He proudly displayed the champion’s s shirt, along with the battered and bandaged trophy, and smiled broadly at winning one for the thumb!!!   ALL HAIL THE KING!!!!!!!!!
