A King is Crowned at Proffitt’s Palace

As I walked through the door, I felt as if I was entering into Royalty! A quick glance past the pool table and big screen televisions, I was able to spy the coveted trophy proudly wearing a Golden crown, set upon a nice bar refrigerator, in between two bottles of what else… Crown Royal!  Right there beside the token of our affections was a brand spanking new personalized custom “Proffitts Palace” 1000 chip set.  There is nothing better than the feel of quality chips!

A beautiful bounty befell us as we entered the galley!  Six feet of Alfredo’s burrito and all the fixings to go with it was to be our feast!  Cookies and Strawberries lined the edge of the counter, Beer and Rockstar filled the fridge, and 101 proof Wild Turkey was to be my choice of spirits.  Royalty I tell ya!

After what should have been a quick game of pool, we settled down into our seats and began our 19th straight South Bay Poker Tour monthly event.  Everyone that I had spoken with before the tournament was itching to play and it showed on the tables. I may have been a little too aggressive early, so by break-time I was re-buying 300,000.  But it was our current trophy holder that really made a donation to the prize pool. With an all-in within the first hour that didn’t go his way and a small donation at break time, he re-bought a total of 600,000 in chips!

After break, when the blinds started their accent, nothing settled down.  El Guapo seemed to take charge at his table until Sub Zero iced the Guap with Quad 7’s and reduced his stack to the likes of a measly pauper.

The Saw, who had played an excellent tournament at the Compton Classic, had big troubles in the Palace.  Unfortunately she was the first out but it was from playing aggressive, and that is what makes her so dangerous to go up against.

In Slicks Picks I proclaimed that I would have my dance and a dance I shall have, as Scooter was third to the gold plated rail!

At the final table was the current trophy champion so everyone had their chance at the headhunter but surprisingly it was the final hand that would yield the headhunter award and it would be Sub Zero who chopped the crown off of the head of the current champion!

Let’s flash back a few players and take a look at how Sub Zero claimed his victory, for it was Kings of all suits that blessed the new King of the S.B.P.T.

The Jerminator was not fairing too well when he decided to call Charlie’s all-in with King-Queen (suited I believe) only to find he’s up against pocket queens. When much to our surprise Royalty presented itself in the form of a king on the turn to all but bankrupt Chuck to send him out seventh!  After doubling up, Sub Zero had a much grander chip stack but wasn’t yet the chip lead. That title was bestowed upon him when Slick called all-in with his pocket Jacks, and Jerminator called with King-Jack. Finding himself way behind again, he was saved by a king on the turn. It was the Pocket Kings of the Jerminator that finished Slicks Royal affair and sent him out in fourth.

Flash forward to the headhunter award. With three players still in contention, the flop was A-K-3, and Fartman who was the short stack decided to push the rest to the center. Without hesitation Sub Zero made the call and surprisingly so did Senor` Pablo who himself had quite a stack. On the turn Zero called all-in and with out hesitation, almost before the Jerminator could finish the sentence, El Guapo made the call! When the Cards were turned over, it was the most Royal starting hand of Ace-King that would edge out the King- Three of El Guapo and the Ace-Deuce of Fartman and take the pot, the headhunter award and the S.B.P.T. title of Tournament Champion!

Thanks to the Proffitt’s for a well hosted event and thanks to everyone who attended for a well played and exciting tournament, and Congratulations to Jeremy on a spectacular trophy win and I believe, the first tournament to be won without heads-up play!

We’re all looking forward to meeting Makena at next month’s tournament!

Many thanks to Sponge and Sandy for their tireless effort of building and maintaining the South Bay Poker Tour website.  It was the website that really brought this idea together and gave the players a way to participate outside the poker room.  Sponge and Sandy decided to hand over the reigns because maintaining this site while running their own business along with coaching their children's baseball teams has made time a commodity and something had to go. I guess choosing their family and livelihood is more important.  I only hope that I will be able to keep up what they started.

If anyone has ideas about how to improve upon what I've done, feel free to help.  I want this to be a group effort and I hope that is what it will be.  One of the first group ideas that I would like help with, is the S.B.P.T. Cookbook!  Please email me any recipes that you have brought to an S.B.P.T. event or are planning to bring.  The first one up will most likely be "Ghetto Cupcakes".  Send me what you have and lets do this!

Thanks again to the Paris family for the efforts.
