What are the odds?
This Month’s query:
What are the odds of calling the first, second, and third out, exactly?
If we went strictly by numbers, the calculations would be very similar or even exactly like calling the win, place, and show exactly… but having looked at our tour rankings of previous months I see definite differences in point totals and placements of finish! So my contention is that figuring who will lose is probably a bit easier than picking a winner. But because this is all for fun, I’ll consider them equally difficult, although in light of last month dismal attendance, I am reducing the player total to eleven.
We are going to use 11 players as our standard for this wager.
For a player to finish first out as predicted (barring any funny business), there is a 1 in 11 chance.
For the next player that is predicted to finish second out, to do so, there is a 1 in 10 shot.
Then of course there would be a 1 in 9 chance for the next predicted player to be third out.
Since these are really fractions that we multiply, but all the 1’s cancel each other out… the real calculation is 11 X 10 X 9 =’s a 990 to 1 shot.
I'll take the wager at 900 to 1 with a max bet of one measly cent... sorry but this is only for fun!
Thanks for playing at Big Slick’s Sports Book!
