What are the odds?
This Month’s query:
Well, with the addition of a two new (fairly novice) players, I would like to propose a wager that asks, “What are the odds” that four players that have yet to win the title of Tournament Champion, will place in any combination of first thru fourth?
It’s difficult to lay this out because the non-tournament champions that will show up are almost consistently finishing in the money. But can they keep a tournament champion away from one of those spots?
There are currently 8 players without a title, but for our calculations, I will use only 6 (no telling if the couple of players who haven’t showed up for a while, will make a surprise appearance). And also I will use a total number of 14 players for the expected absences.
I will go strictly by the numbers, which tell us to:
Multiply 7 over 15 X 6 over 14 X 5 over 13 X 4 over 12, for a total of:
840 over 32760, which equals 39 to 1
I’ll take the wager at 35 to 1 to accommodate player number changers.
